概要
学修到達目標 | スピーキング・リスニング・ライティング・リーディングの4つのスキルアップを目指す。学生 はスピーチを書いたり、小テストがある。 There are several goals for our classes: 1) to be able to use English to complete communication tasks; 2) to develop presentation and public speaking strategies; and, 3) to gain confidence communicating in English. |

授業形態及び 授業方法 |
During class, you will work with a partner or in groups. This will give you many chances to speak English, practice presentation skills, and make classes more fun and interesting. You will also give speeches to small groups of students. Please bring your textbook and my handouts to every class.この授業は全て英語で実施する |
履修条件 | 1. English Communication Iは社会コミュニケーションサブメジャーコースの指定設置科目で、このサブメジャーを取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。2. 教職免許を取る学生はEnglish Communication IIと共に履修しなければならない。 3. その他の学生は、English Communication IとEnglish Communication IIの両方をI・IIの順で履修することが望ましい。前期のみまたは後期のみ履修することは可能ですが、特にEnglish Communication IIのみ履修する場合、担当教員と相談して下さい。 |

第1回 | Getting to know each other 自己紹介と他人紹介 On your own, observe how news casters position their hands while presenting the news. HOMEWORK Write an introduction card |

第2回 | Self-introduction 自己紹介のスピーチ Practice your physical message--hand and feet positions HOMEWORK Write about a friend Review body position and include an interesting anecdote that acts as a 'hook' at the beginning of your speech. Practice Speech 2 in front of a mirror at home. Pay special attention to hand position. |
第3回 | Introducing a friend 友人を紹介するスピーチ Practice your physical message--eye contact. Review and practice physical message and review how to compose effective introductory paragraphs. HOMEWORK Write about something you do every day |
第4回 | Demonstration 実物説明 Practice your physical message--gestures, gestures of famous politicians. Create a 'hook' using an interesting/surprising fact. HOMEWORK Write about your neighborhood Prepare for class by practicing Speech 3 in front of a mirror and focusing on eye contact. |
第5回 | Demonstration 実物説明のスピーチ Conveying your message with gestures, sequencers. Review physical message and how to compose the body of the speech. |
第6回 | Layout レイアウト gestures to convey place or location Review vocabulary and related gestures for sequencers. HOMEWORK Write about your favorite book or movie. Prepare for class by practicing your speech in front of a mirror and focusing on gestures for sequencing. |
第7回 | Layout レイアウトのスピーチ History of the White House, Nixon and Kennedy presidential debate. Review lesson by choosing an English-speaking politician and evaluating his/her use of gestures. Incorporate effective gestures into your own speeches. Quiz--gestures, review pages 34-35 and 48-49. |
第8回 | Book & Movie reviews 本と映画のレビュー Adding emphasis to improve communication and audience understanding HOMEWORK Write about a present you received. Practice Speech 5 in front of a mirror while focusing on gesture for layout/location. |
第9回 | Book & Movie reviews 本と映画をレビューするスピーチ Speech pacing and emphasis. Review words that frequently receive emphasis such as negatives. Practice Speech 6 in front of a mirror and ensure you emphasize certain words to aid understanding. |
第10回 | Show and Tell 実物説明のスピーチ Using visual aids, pausing for emphasis and President Obama's examples. Review the President Obama speech, paying special attention to his use of pauses. HOMEWORK Write about your family. Practice Speech 7 in front of a mirror, incorporating pauses and varying the pace of your delivery. |

Prepare final speeches, ensuring proper physical message, using your voice effectively and structuring your speech accurately. Quiz--word stress and pauses.Review pages 64-65 and 78-79. |
第14回 | Presenting and Accepting Awards & FINAL SPEECH 賞を授与する・される&ファイナルスピーチ Final Speech (15% of your final score) To do well on the final speech, students must incorporate the skills learned in previous classes. |

Scoring: 30% classwork and participation, 15% final speech 授業での参加; 35% homework 課題の提出; 20% short quizzes 小テスト他. If you’re sick, email me and bring a note from kyomuka. Your speeches are to be written at home, so completing your homework is very important. |
